How to write an effective cover letter is the answer to many people’s problems. With so many applicants vying for jobs it can be overwhelming to send out such a generic, impersonal and cold email. But really, this is the only way to go if you want to impress any employer.
This is the second time I’ve seen an applicant (I was one of the very first to write such a letter) receive an interview offer after sending out a really awful way to write a cover letter. Fortunately this applicant was wise enough to realize that it was not to be the last for him or her.
There is, however, a good reason that many applicants fall into this trap of having to overstate their cover letter. That reason is that they are eager to “wow” the employer and tell them what a wonderful job he or she did during the interview. And, what better way to do that than to “show” off your resume with a fancy cover letter that has no substance?
Writing a cover letter for a resume is very different from writing one for an interview. If you want your resume to stand out for a long time, it needs to be a unique document.
Here are some of the most obvious things that you want to avoid when writing a cover letter. You want to avoid using this type of letter anywhere.
The first thing you want to avoid when writing a cover letter is any form of salesmanship. Any writing that feels like you are trying to sell yourself to the employer will not get you any points with that employer.
Second, never imply that they will regret not hiring you. It is always very important to show your desire to work for the company that you are applying for. You do not want to sound desperate to work.
Third, never use any unnecessary word, comma or period. There is nothing wrong with using a little extra space, but it should always flow well. If you are too careful you will leave a question mark in the reader’s mind.
Fourth, remember to use bullets and follow through as well. Be sure to state these bullets without any intervening text.
The next major tip is to keep the text short. This is very important because of how long cover letters can get. For this reason it is best to stick to two sentences at a time.
Finally, there are many different types of documents that the employer may be reviewing. It is very important to be able to effectively showcase your writing abilities with different documents.
These four tips are how to write an effective cover letter. If you use these tips, you will be off to a great start on how to write a great cover letter for yourself.
